Major tunnel work and the 2nd level

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

So I’ve been doing some major tunnel work in the main room during November, but not really because I love tunnels. I’ll explain…

With the ramp up to the 2nd level now functional, I’m very excited about laying more track on the 2nd level. Right now, the track comes to an abrupt end once it reaches the top of the ramp and enters onto the 2nd level. I’m inches away from being able to lay my first switch on the 2nd level, which will be the start of a spur that splits off the 2nd level main line and goes to an industry. The spur line is going to include a REALLY badass trestle along it’s route. The problem is that I can’t go any further with the upper level until the tunnels beneath it are complete. So, I’m trying to bust through all this new tunnel work so that I can get to the fun part of building the new 2nd level of track! Although I don’t expect all of the tunnel work in the main room to be done until at least January, I should be far enough along to add the switch to the 2nd level main line and start construction of the spur line with the next few days. Fun times!

Oh yeah, about the huge trestle I mentioned…I’m terrified about it. I know almost nothing about doing trestle work, so that’s gonna be adventure within itself.

MTH 2009 tinplate club cars begin to show up…

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

After a long wait, the 2009 MTH tinplate club cars are finally starting to show up. Today, I got both the MTH and Lionel Corporation O-gauge tinplate boxcars. They are both really nice looking nickel trimmed cars. I’m still waiting on the Lionel Corporation Standard Gauge 2009 club car to arrive. Hopefully it will get here soon. Happy Thanksgiving!

Tunnel Work

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

I’m making great progress on the longest tunnel of the layout, which I’m calling the “East Tunnel” for now. The hardshell for the tunnel is nearly complete and I will start lining the interior of the tunnel with rock molds soon.

Back to the grind

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

After a brief rest following the Pilgrimage, I’d slowly starting to get back to work on the layout. The ramp to the 2nd level is now functional. I’d like to continue laying track for the 2nd level, but I can’t untilthe tunnel work on the main level in main rook is complete. So, I’ve started tunnel work in the main room again.

Last weekend I went to my friend Rick’s house to check out the layout he and his wife have put together for the 2009 Piedmont Pilgrimage. It was a lot of fun. Here’s some video that I shot…

Video from Piedmont Pilgrimage Open House

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

My buddy Max was smart enough to shoot some video from the Piedmont Pilgrimage open house at my layout a couple days ago. Thanks, Max! Check it out below. Also, check out Max’s own site at http://www.maxtrains.com.

Piedmont Pilgrimage was a blast

We had 62 people visit the layout yesterday, which was a lot more than I expected considering that it’s my first year on the tour, it was Halloween and raining. Not bad at all! As soon as I get some pictures from the open house, I’ll post them. Meanwhile, here’s the promised 2nd video update for my layout that shows all the latest progress on the layout:
