My review of Lionel’s 2009 Vol. 2 catalog

Lionel 2009 Volume 2 CatalogSo Lionel’s newest catalog, 2009 Vol. 2, arrived in my mailbox a few days ago. I’ve now had a chance to look it over pretty thoroughly so now I will proceed to put in my 2 cents about it…

First off, I’ll say that they did a good job and it’s definately more in touch with train enthusiasts than their risky 2009 vol. 1 issue was. Some people are calling this new catalog the “Sorry, we screwed up catalog”. I can buy that. Lionel took a huge risk earlier this year by launching an ultra expensive line of trains (Vision Line) in the middle of a recession. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Vision Line products but it’s execution was poorly planned and I certainly wouldn’t have done it they way to did it. The new catalog is much more balanced and has many items that I’m thinking of ordering.

Lionel Track Mobile 2009The best item, in my opinion, in the new catalog is the TMCC controlled track mobile. I’ve been waiting so long for someone to put out a command controlled piece of MOW equipment. I would have preferred for MTH to do it first, but it seems Lionel beat them to it. I totally plan on ordering at least one of the track mobiles. I really hope that this is the start of a series of MOW pieces that are command controlled. I also hope that MTH will respond with the DCS powered MOW stuff of their own.

I’ve completed all of the hardshell for the hallway room, as well as the last tunnel portal that put the track out onto the lift bridge…

Layout Update 9/22/09

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Here are some pics of my latest progress. The first pic is of the completed entrance to the South Tunnel in the main room and then rest of the photos are from the hallway room…

Here’s the entrance to the South Tunnel in the main room, now complete and waiting for scenery:

Here’s the other end of the South Tunnel in the hallway room. Hardshell is complete and rock molds are progressing. I’ve even managed to color some of the rock:

After the end of the South Tunnel above, we come to another tunnel and more hardshell. This scene is just to the right of the one above.

Same tunnel as above but the cardboard lattice for the hardshell has pushed on a little further. Between the mountain and the edge of the table (where the cordless phone is sitting) is where I will have an abandoned rail line.

Shot from the other end of the hallway room, you can see that the hardshell and lattice framework has extended almost to the last tunnel portal. This is the tunnel portal just before the lift bridge…

Tunnel & Scenic work update

Monday, September 14th, 2009

I’ve completed the first section of the south tunnel on my layout. I’ve also started forming hills/mountains over the section of completed tunnel with foam and cardboard strips, applying hardshell to the forms and adding rock molds to the exterior of the mountain. Check it out…
