First Tunnel Construction Photos

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Here are some first pictures of the construction on my first tunnel for the layout. I’ve named this tunnel the “South Tunnel”, just in case you wanted to know. In the third picture, the foamy mass inside the tunnel is a test rock mold I put in. It will eventually be replaced by a more realistic rock mold that will finish out the tunnel interior. Enjoy!

Tunnel Work Begins

Monday, August 24th, 2009

I’ve officially begun work on the first tunnel for the layout. I’m working on the tunnel that goes from the main room into the hallway room. I’ve completed the hardshell for about 50% of the tunnel. I should have the rest of the tunnel’s hardshell done in the next few days. I’ve got a new rock mold arriving later this week and I will use that to line the interior of the tunnel. I will post a couple pictures once it’s looking a little more complete.

Nikon cameras suck, IMO.

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

I’ve always been a Canon guy, owning nothing but Canon digital cameras. After retiring my last Canon camera (I broke the USB port on it), I decided to break with tradition and try a Nikon. What a bust. We’ve had it for about a year now and the flash no longer works (WTF?) and the battery dies after about 5 minutes of use. Lesson learned. I’m now saving up some money for a new Canon camera. I’d like to step up a bit and get a low end DSLR camera as opposed to the point-n-shoot cameras I usually get. In the meantime, I don’t really have a reliable camera to take pictures with. I’ve got another Canon that’s several years old, but it still works ok so I will use that until the new camera arrives.

Scenic purchases

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I’m about to make my first real scenery purchases any day now. First, I’m going to buying some geodesic foam and a rock mold so that I can start making the tunnel interiors for the layout. Secondly, I’m going to be buying a few ready-made foam retaining wall pieces so that I can correctly position to ramp to the upper level for permanent placement. The start of the ramp goes across a very narrow section of the layout and I need the retaining walls in place so that I can place the tracks in just the right place so that they will fit properly.
