MTH 2009 Vol. 2 catalog released

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

I downloaded a copy of MTH’s new 2009 Vol. 2 catalog from their website today. From my point of view, the big attention grabber in the catalog is the new NRE 3GS21B Genset switchers in MTH’s Premier Line of trains. In case you don’t know, the NRE Genset switchers are the new “green” switchers being used by the real railroads. Because the 3GS21B genset switchers are pretty new locomotives, they have not been available as O-Scale models until this year. Lionel was the first to introduce the genset switcher to O-Scale with their Vision Line Union Pacific Genset Switcher….which I have ordered. As soon as I saw Lionel’s genset switcher in the 2009 catalog, I immediately thought, “I bet MTH will put out their own version to compete with this”. MTH delivered and the new 2009 Vol. 2 catalog sports MTH’s take on the 3GS21B in not 1, but 5 railroad liveries. This is a perfect example of why CAPITALISM RULES!!!

While Lionel’s “Vision” release of the genset switcher will no doubt be incredibly cool, I have to say that MTH’s version is a smarter business decision given the current economy. Lionel has priced their genset at nearly $800 ($800 for a switcher?), whereas MTH has priced theirs at a much more reasonable $430.00. Additioanlly, MTH is offering theirs in 5 railroad liveries as compared to Lionel only offering the UP version. Sure, the MTH genset won’t have a die-cast body or the moving exhaust lids that the Lionel version will have, but I think that ultimately people will be willing to live without a few extra features in order to save $370. Yes, Lionel is offering a $100 rebate when you buy their genset, but will people want to go through all that hassle and still end up paying $270 more? I guess time will tell. Don’t get me wrong, I think Lionel’s genset will be amazing. I’m just not sure that Lionel picked the right time to start putting out ultra expensive models. In my opinion, Lionel would have been better off by holding off on the “Vision” line and doing something more constructive, such as working to equip ALL of their engines with Legacy. MTH gives you the most bang for your buck and MTH’s more conservative plan of sticking to what works and keeping prices as low as possible seems to me to be a better plan for weathering this economic storm.

The first set of 6 backdrop panels arrived today and I now have the first 2 panels installed! It looks great, but it’s a serious pain the ass the get those things up. I think it’s worth the effort though…

Thoughts on airbrush weathering

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

My new Weaver CSX hoppers arrived yesterday and I’ve already weathered 2 of them. For the first car, I’d probably give myself a 7 out of 10 in terms of my personal satisfaction with the job I did. For the second car, which I did today, I’d give myself about a 9 out of 10. As with anything else, practice makes perfect and I am quickly honing my airbrush weathering skills. My first few airbrush weathering tests were pretty much complete failures. I found that I was so intent on getting the weathering “perfect” that it ultimately would result in mistakes and over-weathering. As I got more and more comfortable with the airbrush, however, I relaxed and didn’t “try” so hard…and the results were much better. It seems to me that the trick is to NOT overthink it. Anyway, here’s a picture of one of the Weaver CSX hoppers that I weathered today. It’s very subtle, light weathering…which is a safe start.

New Weaver hoppers on the way

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I’ve ordered 4 new Weaver CSX PS-2 Central Discharge Grain Hoppers. I normally have Weaver do the weathering for me at the factory, but this time I’m going to weather these myself using my new Iwata airbrush. I’ll be using Scalecoat II paint, which is the exact same paint that Weaver uses (Scalecoat is made and sold by Weaver) so my airbrush weathering of these news cars should be very similar to what they do at the factory…if I don’t screw up. While I wait for the new cars to arrive, I will be practicing on a daily basis. Hopefully by the time they arrive, I will be good to go.

Airbrush Upgrade

Monday, April 20th, 2009

I started my airbrushing adventures off a couple years ago by purchasing a Paasche VL series airbrush and a small Testors Blue Mini Air Compressor. I was never able to get the high level of quality out of that airbrush and compressor. I initially blamed this on my lack of experience, but after a while it became obvious that both pieces of equipment were not up to task to doing precision painting and weathering. Instead of a fine stream of paint, I would getting spattering (which ruins everything) and it just never looked right.

All that has changed now. I just purchased a new Iwata Silver Jet Air Compressor and a new Iwata Eclipse HP-CS Airbrush. From the moment I started using the new setup, the saying “you get what you pay for” quickly came to mind. While the new compressor and airbrush set my back a bit, I now know it was well worth it. The Iwata Eclipse HP-CS delivers professional looking results right out of the box. The new Iwata compressor supplies a perfect air supply and has adjustable air pressure as well as an air filter and water trap! It’s perfect. Finally I will be able to do professional weathering and painting jobs with my airbrush! I hope to post some pics of some of the painting I’ve done soon.

Home Made Wheel Stop

Friday, April 17th, 2009

I used some scrap rail and soldered together a unique wheel stop. I was inspired by an article I read that pointed out that on the real railroads pieces of rail are sometimes welded together to fashion an improvised wheel stop. I think it looks pretty cool. I will probably end up painting it a sort of brownish/rust color eventually. I think it’s pretty good for my first try!

The backdrops have been ordered!

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

I’ve finally ordered the much needed backdrops for the main room of the layout. Once the backdrops are installed, I can start working on the upper level of track and also start with some scenery! I’ve been pretty much at a stand-still until the backdrops get installed, so ordering them today was a big step forward!
