The next videos I release will 2 reviews of Lionel items. First up, we have the new Vision Line Ethanol Tank Car Set. This set is the most technically advanced freight car set I’ve ever seen. Unbelievable. Second, I’ll be doing a quick review of the new Vision Line CP Hybrid Diesel.

Lionel 2010 Vol. 2 Catalog

Lionel released their 2010 vol. 2 catalog today. I checked it out on their website and it’s pretty good. I’ll be ordered several items from the catalog for sure. Highlights for me include the Boy Scout 100th Anniversary UP engine and cars, the UP DD35A’s, the all die-cast ES44′s and the Norfolk Southern version of the Vision genset switcher. It remains to be seen what MTH will offer in their upcoming catalog, but for right now I think Lionel has the edge.

Tunnel Widening Project

Well, I now have a new project to work on…as if I didn’t have enough already. When I started building the tunnels on my layout, I built them to handle the largest engines and cars that I had at the time. I’ve since added a big articulated steam engine to my roster and it has trouble getting through most of the tunnels. Right now I can only run it on the middle loop in the main room. The good news is that the tunnels themselves are really not the problem. Rather, it’s the tunnel portals that are the culprit. Most of my tunnels are on curves and the portals just aren’t wide enough to accommodate the huge overhang oft the articulated steamers. For this reason, I’m going to be widening any of the tunnel portals on the layout that are on curves (which is most of them). This will be a long term project so it might be a year or more before everything is completely fixed. It’s not a huge priority because it only effects 1 of my engines….but in the long run I’d like to able to run that engine and other articulated engines on the main loop one of these days.

Website database conversion

I’ve been working for the past several days to put all of my trains into a database so that they can be more easily managed, searched and sorted. I’ve got all of my K-Line, Weaver, Atlas and Lionel items into the database as of now and I’m presently working on the MTH items (of which I’ve got about 20% done). Once I’ve got everthing into the database, I can add some neat sorting and search features that will let myself and others see exactly what I’ve got in my fleet.

Lots of filming going on this week.

I’ve filmed about 50% of the video for the 2nd scenery video is which I build up the surrounding landscape around the tunnel that I built in the 1st scenery video. Hopefully I can finish all the filming and start editing this week. I’m also going to be filming 2 product reviews this week as well for an MTH Santa Fe F3 set and for an MTH 2-8-8-4 DMIR Yellowstone.

Right now I’m working on 3 videos simultaneously, all 3 of which will be included on the upcoming “Eric’s Trains Volume 1″ DVD. 2 of the videos show fixes for power problems on a steam engine and a diesel engine. The 3rd video is part 2 of my scenery how to and shows how to scenic the area around the tunnels that I built in the first scenery video. The 2nd scenery video will be available on youtube. The 2 other videos will only be available on the upcoming DVD.
