Thanks for the explanation Eric. loco-dan's comment didn't make reference to either HO or O and since I am not concerned with HO production, that is why I didn't understand the distinction between Proto 2/3 boards. Don't get me wrong, I have been supporting Mike Wolf even before he began production of MTH trains and I understand that Proto 1 trains aren't digital, I've just spent too many $$ buying trains from those early 3 a year catalogs, from the mid to late 90's and the cost to convert them to Proto 2 will be quite high. Heck, MTH has actually set the pace for 3 rail(Hi-Rail) quality & production, its just that Lionel, AtlasO and Weaver are beginning to close the gap, while MTH is exploring these other markets. Thanks, TFI

I think was Dan meant was that MTH is waiting for new Proto-Sound 2 and 3 boards to come in. PS 2 is for for everything except HO. HO uses PS 3, which is basically PS2 for HO. If and when they do make a major upgrade to DCS, I am confident that it will be backwards compatible with the previous system. The old PS1 engines weren't really digital control at all. They just had a sound system, so it wasn't possible to have them be compatible with PS2. I'm sure that any future upgrades will be backward compatible. I'm not worried about it.

I agree with you Eric. After reviewing the "New" MTH 2010 Vol.2 Catalog, I was "very" disappointed with its offerings. It seems that the European, HO and Garden Railroad markets will be receiving all the attention now. I was also able to see one of the new Lionel GE Hybrid model locomotives, that you reviewed in your video and "wow" it was heavy (all die cast)! I guess we'll have to wait for an MTH response, if there is to be one? From reading what loco-dan wrote, I wonder if an upgrade to one of the new DCS 2/3 boards, will follow the same pattern, as the changeover from Proto 1 to Proto 2 has? In other words, will the cost be similar as it is now to make the conversation from 1 to 2 now, if possible? Or will MTH remake the same locomotives, with the "new" boards and we'll have to "re-buy" our favorite locomotive for a 2nd time? I have been buying MTH locomotives since the first Challenger was offered in the early 90's and I find this to be a costly kind of "progress", for what is supposed to be a "hobby". I also feel that Lionel is beginning to catch up with MTH, in both quality and variety and they don't seem to be developing production for the European markets, but instead they seem to be concentrating on the US market. To me Lionel still has a bit of a way to go with some of their products, like MTH Premier passenger cars, but how many sets of PRR and NYC passengers cars do we really need anyway? Keep up the good work Eric! TFI

The DCS commander has been out for a couple years now. I'd like to see an updated DCS remote control with a better screen and a slider for the quillable whistle. Hopefully the next catalog will be a bit better, but this one just isn't that exciting. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge MTH fan and I'm not badmouthing them at all.

Eric, I believe MTH is waiting on their new DCS 2/3 boards. Should be in production this August. New TIU coming too. The DCS commander looked interesting, would allow turning the power on a siding after the TIU has been powered up. MTH has verbally stated there would be a scale 44T switcher after the new boards are out. Hope this helps.
